Benefits of Lemon Water

Hung over from the weekend? Dehydrated? Spent hours on a plane? Feeling nauseous from binge eating the night before? LEMON WATER is the cure all.

Why drink lemon water?

Not only is Lemon high in Vitamin C, coming in at 44.5 mg/lemon (74% RDV), but it’s chalk full of other benefits* including:

Contains Antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds found in fruits, veggies and superfoods which help our body neutralise the toxins absorbed from pollution, diet, and lifestyle.

Strengthens immunity

Balances electrolytes + great for exercise recovery

Increases absorption of plant-derived Iron

Prevents kidney stones

Boosts skin health

Helps with weight-loss

Cleanses the liver

The liver is an organ that is involved in over 500 functions in the body – pretty much everything from digestion, hormone balance, energy production, blood sugar regulation, and much much more.

Pro-Tip: Don’t Forget the Lemon Peel

If your lemon is organic, do not chuck out the peel! It contains 5 to 10 times more vitamins than the juice itself! I like to freeze the peel and use the zest for salads, teas, and smoothies.

Citric Acid AKA Fake Lemon Juice is Not Lemon

Citric Acid, a common preservative used in processed food is NOT the equivalent of Lemon. Citric Acid is a by-product of black mold. Yuck! I know. Its added in many processed foods to extend the shelf life and is sold as a quick alternative to lemon juice. Nutritionally, it does not contain anything remotely close to lemon and should be avoided.

When it comes to nutrition, just stick to what your grandma would have eaten, plain and simple whole foods.

Lemon Digestive and Liver Tonic

This lemon digestive and liver tonic is so refreshing and hydrating. It’s become part of my morning ritual. It’s the perfect way to break the fast after your night’s slumber or to replenish your electrolytes after a hard workout. I also drink it before/after a flight or a long drive.

Ingredients and Method

In a 500 ml bottle or glass, squeeze the juice of half of a lemon/lime with 500 ml/16oz of warm or lukewarm filtered water.

I mix half hot water with half room temperature or cold water. Thats it!

Optional Digestive and Blood Sugar Balancing Boost: Add 1 tbsp unfiltered organic Apple cider vinegar (ACV)*To support digestion and balance blood sugar levels, drink a glass of water with ACV 5-10 minutes before meal. You can also drink it after a heavy meal that causes indigestion, bloating, gas.

*I know the taste of vinegar is not for everyone (except for the brits!). The first time I tried it, I downed the glass because it was so harsh. But after seeing how it improved my digestion and my blood sugar levels, I was sold. Now I make these ACV and lemon cocktails on the regular.
